Well, where do you start. Tranmere where outplayed, outclassed and outmuscled today. Two quick goals from Lloyd Sam and Jose Semedo essentially put the game beyond Tranmere, who offered little in midfield or attack. Don’t get me wrong Charlton are a good side, they moved the ball quickly across the midfield and in Jonjo Shelvey they have a talented attacker who floated between the back four and midfield four in white.
Tranmere like we have seen all too often this season didn’t offer any grit or determination, and in the 3-0 defeat to Leeds and today, twice in one season, let alone in the first five league games is extremely concerning. A change in formation and tactics at half time was good to see, but ultimately did not provide any respite because as soon as Tranmere had kicked off they were 3 down.
It’s difficult to take encouraging signs, but Michael Ricketts made a difference when he came on. A deep cross seemed to flummox Luke Daniels for Charlton’s fourth and cement what was an embarrassing result. The Prenton Park faithful quickly became restless and “Barnsey out” echoed around the kop, with ironic chants of “Ronnie Moore Moore Moore”. A chorus of boos greeted the final whistle and John Barnes and Jason Mcateer have a lot of thinking ahead of next weeks tricky trip to Carlisle, changes will have to be made, simple as that.
